Our Mission
At the H-E-B Tennis Center in Harlingen, our mission is to make tennis accessible and affordable for everyone. We are a team dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where players of all ages and skill levels can develop their love for the game. By offering affordable court prices, memberships, and equipment rentals, we work together to ensure that cost is never a barrier to participation.
Our professional coaching staff collaborates to provide top-notch instruction and support. We believe in actively reaching out to the community, taking tennis to populations that might typically not consider it a viable option for them. As a team, we strive to show that tennis is open to everyone and can open doors both personally and professionally. Our collective goal is to inspire a lifelong passion for tennis, promote physical health, and strengthen the connections within Harlingen and the Rio Grande Valley
Our History
The H-E-B Tennis Center in Harlingen, located at Pendleton Park on Morgan Boulevard, celebrated its grand reopening in 2021, marking a new era for this historic facility. Established in October 1973 by H-E-B, the center has long been a cornerstone for tennis enthusiasts.
H-E-B, known for its reputable grocery stores across Texas, has played a significant role in promoting tennis through the establishment of this center. Howard E. Butt Sr., the founder, had a deep passion for tennis and fitness, which drove the creation of this and other tennis facilities throughout Texas.
Over the decades, the center evolved from a modest facility to a comprehensive tennis venue. Initially featuring basic amenities and a few courts, the center expanded its infrastructure to accommodate larger and more competitive events as tennis gained popularity.
The recent renovations, funded by a joint partnership between H-E-B and the city of Harlingen, have transformed the facility. This includes 14 upgraded courts, a state-of-the-art pro shop, an air-conditioned lobby with restrooms, and a covered patio designed to host future tennis events and tournaments.
Today, the H-E-B Tennis Center hosts numerous junior high, high school, and collegiate-level tournaments, along with USTA and UTR sanctioned events. This broad range of activities highlights the center’s pivotal role in fostering competitive tennis at all levels.
Looking ahead, the center plans to add a center court, additional covered patio areas, and potentially more courts to meet growing demand. These enhancements will further establish it as a premier destination for tennis in the region.
